I'm moving my little business (my use of AS being an important part of it) from my old computer to the new Dell I just got. I need to move my AS environment (elaborate sieves, extensive trash word lists etc.) to the new computer.

How do I do this as painlessly as possible? It would take hours and hours to type in all these things into a new AS installation on the new computer, and I'd probably get something wrong. I'm computer literate, so if you want to talk about copying files and/or directories, adding registry entries, etc., I can probably handle it.

My old computer has Windows XP Pro and the new computer has Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1.

Thanks for any advice you could give,
A loyal and grateful user

It's quite easy.

The important files are in the AuctionSieve directory. They are :
- *.sieve (all the .sieve files)
- pricehistory.txt
- watchlist.txt
- auctionsieve.properties

So
1. Make sure you haven't got AuctionSieve running on the Vista PC
2. On your old computer, find the directory where you installed AuctionSieve (usually C:\Program Files\AuctionSieve)
3. On the new computer, do likewise (I'm not sure where that is on Vista)
4. Copy the files listed above from the old location to the new location

They're all plain text files so you can open them up in notepad and have a look at them if you want.

May I ask what your business is? I'm curious about how people use AuctionSieve.

Thanks, Nev,

So I install AS on the new computer first, and then copy over the files you specify on top of the new installation?

As for my business, I'm a coin dealer, and sometimes I find overlooked rarities on eBay. The rarities are few and far between, so I need all the help I can get (and AS does help) to make it worthwhile looking.

Yep, that's right.
Install on the new computer, then copy over those files on top of whatever's there.

Hi Nev

I too have transferred AS to my new computer (Vista OS). I'd already copied over all the files you suggested ;

*.sieve (all the .sieve files)
- pricehistory.txt
- watchlist.txt
- auctionsieve.properties

AS runs OK but curiously it seems to have 'shuffled the data' somehow ? I run a sieve and it comes up with a list of expected items relevant to the search criteria. I follow the url and it always takes me to another list item on ebay entirely (although it's always something from one of my other sieves). But always the items are 'auction ended' / time expired.

I've tried to figure out what I've done wrong, but I'm at a loss. I've probably done something stupid, since this has been the first time I've transferred AS. I'm loathe to start again from scratch, given the volume of trash words I've accumulated. Also I've searched this Forum, but in vain. So any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

regards

Richard

P.S. I think AS is great - it saves me so much time !

Hi Richard,

What version are you running.
You'll need the current beta which fixes some of problems.

Hi

I was on 1.9.1.1. I've now upgraded to 1.9.1.2 but I'm still getting the same problem.

The problem is consistent - I've tried every sieve over a couple of weeks now (during which time my pc has been re-booted) and it happens 100% of the time. The sieve results themselves seem ok - ie relevant to the search and in date. But when I follow a url, normally I get an item from another sieve entirely, never the item in question and always it's time expired.

Curious....Have you ever come across this before ? Or is it me !

regards

Richard

Thanks Nev.

I've looked at the thread - similar, but not my issue unfortunately. I've upgraded to 1.9.1.3 but still no joy. I use general search sieves, not category-specific sieves by the way.

I've noticed that each time I follow an item url, it takes me to a different expired item from another sieve, ie not the same wrong one each time. And curiously all sieve result items seem to follow the same pattern.

I'm just wondering if I did something silly when I copied the files over to my new computer. I've re-checked, and they're all there. But it's as if my sieve list is frozen at that point and is not updating.

Any other ideas ?

regards

Richard

Hmmmmm

I have an idea about what might be happening.

First of all, can I just confirm - are you using Windows XP? Or Vista?

Do you have users on your computer ie you don't just log in as administrator?

Did you copy across the tmp directory? When you click to view an auction, AuctionSieve writes a small html file to the tmp directory which then gets loaded by your browser. These files have names like view01.html. In your case, perhaps AuctionSieve doesn't have permission to overwrite the files that already exist. So you see whatever is in the old file.

If you zip up your AuctionSieve directory and send it to me I could analyze it a bit more.

Thanks Nev

Sorry for my delay in replying - work tends to get in the way of my hobbies Smile

I'm using Vista in Admin profile. I have no other profiles set up.

I don't recall copying across the tmp file - but maybe I did. But looking at te sub-directory, there are no files more recent than my file transfer date. So your suspicion is right - the tmp files aren't being written. I guess the question is : why not ? Profile is always a potential culprit, but I'm definitely in Admin. I can't think of another reason to prevent file writing.

I'll zip it up and send separately - thanks for your interest in helping me out.

regards

Richard

Actually, instead of sending me those files, have a look at this thread :
http://www.auctionsieve.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=369

You both seem to be having the same problem so it'll be easier to keep it in one thread.

Do what I request in my last 2 emails in that thread.

I'm also moving AS to a new computer. But in my AS folder, there are no *.sieve files ???? A Windows search of my entire C: drive also shows no files. But they must be present somewhere, as my current copy of AS shows about 8 current sieves that all work fine. Whats going on ????

The location of the files is detailed here :
http://www.auctionsieve.com/support/faq/#backup_windows

The search probably didn't find the files because those folders are hidden by default in Windows.
Let me know if you have a problem finding them and I can help you un-hide them.

You are correct. Files found and transferred. Thanks
