Hi Nev,

It appears eBay US is rolling out big changes to its category structure, de-emphasizing categories in favor of themes, subjects, and other attributes not accessible in Auctionsieve.

The Wargames category just got shut down.

Wargames are now categorized as Games > Board & Traditional Games > Theme: War.

Here's a response from an eBay dev, outlining their goals:

Books have been this way for a long time, broken into massive categories like "Nonfiction" and "Fiction & Literature" and only narrowed down by selecting the Subject attribute. This has made Book category searches impractical, as there are a couple million listings at any given time.

It seems clear this is the direction that eBay wants to take, de-emphasizing categories in favor of attributes, which will hurt the viability of AS category searches. Sure, you can add search terms to category searches, but then you're missing out on all the deals to be found with misspellings and incorrect search terms.

Will you be able to add attributes as an option in AS searches?

Would it be possible to add an option for the AS user to type the exact name of the attribute type, and then the attribute?

For example, Fantasy books are found in Fiction & Literature > Subject: Fantasy. It can be narrowed down further by Topic: Historical.

The link looks like this:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Fiction-Literature-/171228/i.html?Subject=Fantasy&_dcat=171228&Topic=Historical&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

You can see the Subject=Fantasy and Topic=Historical in the link. Seems to a non-coder like me that a user could enter 1 or more attribute types, followed by an associated attribute, and AS could go from there.

Update: Nev added this to the Trello to-do list, where he tracks Auctionsieve feature requests, and version releases. If you're curious about where Auctionsieve is headed, it's a good page to visit, and maybe vote/comment on ideas.
