Just went to use AuctionSieve on my OSX machine running 10.3.9 and it no longer runs - the process appears and disappears with no messages.

Other java applications still run OK, so the JVM appears to be intact.

There are a couple of crash logs created which I can attach or e-mail.

I tried running the Uninstaller and it didn't work either, so I d/l'ed a fresh copy of the base installer and tried to overwrite my version, no better. So I renamed that folder out of the way (and the prefs files in Library/Preferences) and did a fresh install into a different folder, still doesn't go.

The crash log says (in brief):

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x54687285

Thread 1 Crashed:
0 libobjc.A.dylib 0x907031ec objc_msgSend + 0xc
1 libawt.jnilib 0x8108b64c JNI_OnLoad + 0x3c
2 libjava.jnilib 0x971a3b24 Java_java_lang_ClassLoader_00024NativeLibrary_load + 0xa4

The only thing I've done recently is to install the latest OSX patches (iTunes/Quicktime/Safari).

Any ideas, anyone?

Dave

I did the same as you and downloaded the lastest version of Safari (1.3.2) as well as itunes and after rebooting, Auctionsieve will no longer open. I tried trashing my present application and downloading another, but it won't open either. I assume that the latest version of Safari is the offender.

I can't figure anything out from a quick search around google.

From that small snippet it seems to be having trouble loading some native library.

Yeah if you could email me the crash logs that'd be great.

One question - are both of you on dual cpu machines? And can you disable one of the cpus?

One thing to try is to reinstall java...

It appears there are quite a number of people experiencing problems with the latest 10.4.4 update - not just with Java apps.

Hopefully something will come to light over the next few days.
Any help would be appreciated as I don't have a mac myself!

Nope, single processor 1.33 GHz Powerbook 15".

These are the things that have been installed/updated since AS ran successfully:
QuickTime 7.0.4 (update)
iTunes 6.0.2 (update)
Safari 1.3.2 (update)
Battery updater (new)
iPod updater 2006-01-10 (new)
Flip4mac Quicktime (new)
Missing Sync for Palm 5.0.3 (update)

The lib*.jnilib files in the JavaVM frameworks directories were modified during the software upgrade (Quicktime/iTunes/Safari/Battery Updater/iPod Updater), during the prebinding phase, so I assume something forced them to be relinked.

Which version of Java does AS use (1.4.2 or 1.3.1)? NeoOffice/J uses 1.4.2 and it is still working fine.

I'm running 10.3.9.

I did have the "Disk Utility" failure, but that's easily fixed (remove redundant iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts).

I couldn't see anyone complaining about Java in your links.

I'm running os 10.3.9, as well. I have an Imac G4, single cpu. Like DaveHill, I also downloaded the latest update for QuickTime 7.0.4 (update) iTunes 6.0.2 (update) Safari 1.3.2 (update). After downloading these updates AS would no longer open. I don't know how to get a crash report if it won't open.

There are two crash reports, one is written into the folder "Library/Logs" in your home folder, it is called "JavaNativeCrash_pidX.log" (where X is a number). The other is written into the sub-folder "CrashReporter" in the same place, this report is called "AuctionSieve.crash.log".

You can create an archive of them then attach it to an e-mail.

I have two machines running 10.3.9 (G3 Pismo laptop, G4 500 Desktop). Neither would run AuctionSieve after the updates. As nothing elee worked , I installed AuctionSieve on another G4 500 running Tiger. All worked well. I upgraded the other G4 500 to Tiger and it now runs AuctionSieve properly as well.

Niether machine would run ANY Java app (Limewire, JBidWatcher). But all runs fine now. I know it's not a fix, but it should provide some more fuel for the fire...

I sent some crash reports to Nev. I can run Limewire and my stock trading application (which is Java based), but I can't open Bidwatcher. Maybe this is Apples way of forcing us to upgrade to Tiger.

Ok, apparently the culprit is the new Quicktime 7.0.4 update.
You can downgrade back to 7.0.1 here :
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html

Let me know if that fixes it.

Oh and Dave, regarding which version of Java AS uses - it tries to use the highest version available but it must be at least 1.3.

(A long time ago I specified this incorrectly and it was set to use 1.3 only. So if you installed AS over ~1.5 years ago it may be worth doing a full install.)

I did the reinstall of Quicktime and that solved the problem. Thanks to Nev of the quick solution.

Cheers,

Thanks for the pointer. I Googled(TM) around a bit and according to this posting on the Apple Dev lists http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2006/Jan/msg00349.html, the problem is caused by "a very old" version of the Java Launcher Stub, i.e. the file "AuctionSieve.app/Contents/MacOSX/AuctionSieve".

The post suggested replacing that with the latest one /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub so I tried this and AS now starts fine with QT 7.0.4 installed.
