Hi,
I can't get the installer to install. I've read the FAQ and also tried this from the root account. The console.log gives me the following:

===== Tuesday, July 4, 2006 8:30:33 PM US/Pacific =====
[LaunchRunner Error] The main class "com.zerog.lax.LAX" could not be found.
[JavaAppLauncher Error] CallStaticVoidMethod() threw an exception
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.run(LaunchRunner.java:85)
at apple.launcher.LaunchRunner.callMain(LaunchRunner.java:50)
at apple.launcher.JavaApplicationLauncher.launch(JavaApplicationLauncher.java:52)

Can anyone advise a solution?
Thanks
W

Hi welsh, or should I call you mr baloney?

I've had a look around and found other people that have encountered this problem with other java apps (like limewire).

In those cases it turned out that their download was corrupt in some way - perhaps the file was not fully downloaded or unzipped using a tool that didn't handle the zip file properly.

Try downloading it again and check the file size - the zip file should be 1,403,912 bytes.

Thanks nev,
I downloaded the ZIP file again and confirm the size you quote. Still having the same problem running the installer.

Tried unzipping with Suffit Delux 10 and Stuffit Expander 10.

I found another unzip app on versiontracker, tried that and the installer failed there too. This failure didn't even produce a Console output...strange.

Oh, I'm on PPC btw.

Thanks
Tony.

You wouldn't happen to be using Panther (10.3.x) would you?

No, I'm on Tiger 10.4.7.

I've been reading about some people experiencing dead Java apps with Quicktime. There are a couple of Apple Quicktime reversal apps that will downgrade QT to an earlier version and some people have reporting this fixing their broken Java problem. Unfortunately, I'm up to date on QT and there is no reinstaller from the version I'm on.

Other than that I have no ideas.

Hmmmmmmm

Do you know what version of Java you're running?
The latest version (Java 5.0 release 4) is available here:
http://developer.apple.com/java/download/

Note that this is a more up to date version than the one linked to from the standard apple java page - for some reason they've still got that stuck at release 1.

It's only as of release 4 that they've made Java 5.0 the default - even if you have Java 5.0 release 1, the mac still treats Java 1.4 as the default. Confused yet?

If I type "java -version" in the Terminal, I get...

java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-112)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-64, mixed mode, sharing)

How frustrating.
I can't think of anything else at the moment.

As a last resort you should be able to install one of these versions from this page:
"Other Java-enabled Platforms"
"Any Unix Platform"

Hi, I'm having a super-frustrating time w/ this update, I'm pretty sure b/c of the Java.

From Terminal, my Java info is
java version "1.4.2_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_07-215)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-50, mixed mode)

I'm running 10.4.8, updated thru Software Update.

I tried downloading Java updates from the developer area as you suggested, but whenever I try to install, I get a "You must update to the latest available version of Java through Software Update" message, and the Installer then closes. Well, if I could do that, I woulda done it, you know? Confused So, this is more of a help-me-please-with-Java query, but if you could tell me what's going wrong that would be great. (If not that's okay too.)

Hi Meg,

Well you could try downloading this one first :
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html

The strange (stupid) thing is that, for some inexplicable reason, it doesn't become the default Java - 1.4 remains the default. Dunno why they chose to do that.

Which release from this page did you try to install? Release 4 (Intel)? :

I AM on a PPC G4 mini. If that makes a difference. So was downloading PPC and not Intel version. Haven't tried anything yet as have just started new job this week, very little spare time. Will try this weekend & let you know. Thanks.

I'm back. Thought I'd download the latest and try again. I'm having *exactly* the same installation issue as before Sad

Oh well...

Thanks for the pointer. I downloaded/installed the latest (J2SE 5.0 Rel 4 for Mac OSX 10.4) from the Apple web site, then downloaded the Max OSX installer for auctionsieve without VM (from http://www.auctionsieve.com/download/other-downloads.htm). When I run the installer, it bounces once then quits. This time, however, there is nothing reported in the console.log file - not sure if that's progress or not!

Tony.

oh yep
i use xp, the uninstaller was broken somehow
so first i had to manually delete every trace of AS first then clean my registry
which is a windows thing

to find what files to delete i had to manually expand every compressed component of the install pack using winrar

not sure how this applies to mac; it worked for me

I am very happy with as and will use it for sure
