PostPosted: Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:16 am    Post subject: 2.1.1 strange stuff! (sorry, LONG) Reply with quote

Hi all

I don't think this is me breaking it, but here's some strange stuff I'm seeing.

Searching; (title and description search is on. Site is UK)

The search options are different between Ebay and AS, AS has 3 ebay 4, I'm using what I think is the closest match for comparison.

1.
I'm looking for a Coleman multi fuel lamp or lantern, so I set up a sieve for;

Code:
Coleman lamp
search on ebay brings back 153 (AS 152) results and
Code:
coleman lantern
brings back 32 (AS 3400)

The search
Code:
(Coleman),(lamp,lantern)

gets me 0 results with AS, 246,164 results on ebay search with EXACT PHRASE.

Code:
(Coleman),(lamp,lantern)

gets me 242250 results with AS, 246,157 results on ebay search. With ALL WORDS ANY ORDER.

Code:
(Coleman,(lamp,lantern))

gets me 242200 results with AS, 246,145 results on ebay search. With ALL WORDS ANY ORDER.

I should see about 170 results... (today)

So, if I then search on
Code:
"coleman" (lamp,lantern)

with AS I get 354 returned, ebay 179!

Ebay claims that quotes "Searches for only the word or phrase in the listing title" http://pages.ebay.com/help/search/advanced-search.html

Now if I go back and search for
Code:
coleman lamp

I get 179 in ebay and 152 in AS..

BUT not only are the totals returned different, in ebay all hits are coleman and lamp, in AS there are tents, socks, hats and all sorts of false hits making up that 152. Almost like the results are showing some of the current search and some from previous searches???? Something strange there for sure.

2.
SEARCH;
The previous limit of 1000 (ish) characters seems to have been reduced to something nearer to about 200. Searches with more than 200 characters just search for the firat 200 characters... This seems to be a change in ebay rather than a bug in AS

3.
WATCHLIST
Highlight a word in the top window, bottom window does not show all instances of the word (I'm expecting it to?, 4 instances in top window visible but only 2 shown in lower window. Price history works as expected)

4.
PRICE HISTORY
Have 5 items in history that are still running... should this be only closed items??

also... maybe connected with above; Top item in top window shows; (The square brackets are mine)

&nbsp:0097 [next tab] 1272310672000 [next tab] true (false) [next tab] - [next tab] false [next tab] Unknown

5.
After creating a sieve, there seems to be no way to copy catch words and trash words to another sieve.

6.
TIMEFRAME
Timeframe element was not working, ENDING TODAY showed everything on EBAY that was ending today not just the sieve that was running, but I cant replicate that problem today.

7.
GENERAL
unable to right mouse in a field? although ctrl-A, ctrl-C, ctrl-V do work.

8.
Min and Max price. A question, not a bug... this doesn't check against buy it now? is that correct?

9.
Lastly!
Is it possible to make the SEARCH TERM, WORDS TO EXCLUDE and SELLERS TO(include, exclude) windows longer? They are currently about 40 chrs long, any chance of 80 or 160 chrs long?

Thanks
[EDIT]
Just had a auction sieve crash;
java version 1.6.0_18
vm version 16.0-b13
runtime version 1.6.0_18-b07
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

I copied text to clipboard and closed. On reboot, 8 sieves with items in it had been deleted / were missing. Only 2 were left visible and functional.
Sad

I don't suppose the data from the sieves is stored anywhere is it?

A couple of the sieves are now called unknown 1 and unknown 2!

More crashes;
java.lang.IllegalStateException:buffers have not been created.
etc...

I noticed similar behavior - in general getting less results than from ebay directly, but occasionally more! It felt like ebay had killed the advanced search functions (the commas and brackets functionality), which as most of my sieves use such would have been a real killer for me.

I checked the ebay help pages but everything I was doing seemed correct. And then I found that if I went back later, the results came back. I think either ebay were tweaking something at the time I noticed, or they have a "feature" whereby when the server load gets high, you get less results.

Thank goodness for the ability to repeatedly search using Auctionsieve, and "Ignore auctions already seen"...

Andrew

Edit - also on ebay.co.uk

Hi Max

Thanks for the post. I've been slack in responding - I usually only get to work in small chunks at night time and this post has been too daunting to tackle. All good stuff though! So don't let me discourage you.

Ok, here we go

1. Just tried out out these searches and they appear to bring back the same counts in AS and ebay. There have been some changes to ebay (and fixes in AS) since you posted this, so maybe that's cleared up the problem.

2. Rightio

3. When looking at the Watchlist, the bottom panel shows price history - the idea being that you can compare what's in your watchlist with what's in your price history.

4. There were some bugs in the watchlist/price history code that I fixed but I suspect there's still some flakiness in there - generally around getting that final retrieve of details before AS is satisfied... and if the item is no longer valid it may get stuck in limbo.

5. If you select File->New Sieve..., the dialog has an option to "Copy Catch and Trash words from other Sieve", but once created, no, there's now way to copy them. A workaround is to hand edit the files.

6. NA

7. Fair enough

8. It does check against BIN - eg search "coleman" (lamp, lantern) with min of 80 max of 90 currently returns 34 results in ebay and AS, 1 with a normal price, the rest all BINs.

9. Maybe.... really need some stats on user screen res - important for the extra search dialog - still a heck of a lot of people running 1024x768 Sad At least there are very few running 800x600 now!

Sorry about the crashes. Sad
Backup info is in that other thread
